Workshop on Computational Science for Extreme Scale Computing (CSI-EXTREMESCALE)

April 18-22 , 2012,  Cancun, Mexico

The general goal of the meeting, as a continuation of the previous series of Workshops, is to bring together distinguished researchers from around the world and México to present and discuss the latest advances in Computational Science for Extreme Scale Computing.

The specific goals of the workshop are:

 

  • To identify the latest developments in Computational Science for Extreme Scale Computing.
  • To identify joint research opportunities in the fields of Computational Science for Extreme Scale Computing.
  • To form multidisciplinary groups that will scope joint research initiatives and projects.

Outline the main issues and opportunities contained in the European Unions Framework Program 7 for scientific research, as well a current programs funded by the National Science Foundation and other scientific research programs and discuss opportunities for possible joint research projects.
It is envisaged that this will help to establish further collaboration with key partners in Mexico.
There will be series of talks and discussions on the future developments as well as research projects scoping.
Extended versions of the best papers of the workshop will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Computational Science .

Topics:
The workshop focuses on novel  scalable mathematical methods and scientific algorithms which are needed in order to enable key science applications to exploit the computational power of large-scale systems. These extreme-scale systems require novel scientific algorithms to hide network and memory latency, have very high computation/communication overlap, have minimal communication, and have no synchronization points. Scientific algorithms for multi-petaflop and exa-flop systems also need to be fault tolerant and fault resilient, since the probability of faults increases with scale. Key science applications require novel mathematical models and system software that address the scalability and resilience challenges of current- and future-generation extreme-scale HPC systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
•    Novel mathematical methods and scientific algorithms that improve performance, scalability and resilience.
•    Porting scientific algorithms and applications to many-core and heterogeneous architectures
•    Performance and resilience limitations of scientific algorithms and applications at scale
•    Scientific algorithms that can exploit extreme concurrency.
•    Naturally fault tolerant, self-healing or fault oblivious scientific algorithms
•    Programming models and system software support for algorithm scalability and resilience

International Collaboration
This workshop presents a unique opportunity for collaboration under the EU Framework 7 Program (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/) and, also, there are several areas funds available for collaboration between Mexican researchers and researcher in the United States, accessed mainly through the National Science Foundation calls (CreativeIT http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=501096 and PIRE (Partnerships for Research) http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=12819)
This workshop, organized by Tecnologico de Monterrey, Emory University and Barcelona Supercomputing Center,  aims to  improve the possibilities to participate in FP 7 research projects as well as collaboration with USA for the participants. All participants, Mexican and non Mexican, are associated with prestigious research institutions and universities, with long experience in proposal integration and international collaboration.
The workshop will take place 18th- 22nd of April, 2012 in Cancun, Mexico at the NH-Krystal. A participation of between 30 and 40 researchers is expected from many different countries.

Registration:
